On 6th December, Nathan McGovern, a spokesperson for climate and animal justice group Animal Rebellion, appeared on Piers Morgan's evening Talk TV show to talk about the group’s latest high-end restaurant sit-in actions.
At the weekend supporters of Animal Rebellion occupied two restaurants boasting luxury dining experiences, in Manchester and London. The group criticised these businesses as symptomatic of a broken system [1].
The restaurants included Turkish influencer Salt Bae's exclusive Knightsbridge steakhouse 'Nusr-Et' where Piers was recently filmed sprinkling salt on a gold-coated steak worth £1,450.
Moments into the interview Nathan revealed a bingo card predicting how Piers would handle the interview, correctly anticipating that he would criticise Meghan Markle and pull a stunt to eat a steak in front of his guests [2].
Nathan, 23, said:
"The bingo card was inspired by Piers’ repeated lazy antics when faced with guests invited on to his show to supposedly discuss urgent issues such as our climate and ecological emergencies.
His efforts to make every interview about himself and to surprise interviewees with stunts are so predictable, but I was still delighted to get five out of nine on the bingo card in such a short time.
The fact that he even found a way to shoehorn criticism of Meghan Markle into the interview to complete a bingo row was the icing on the cake".
The Saturday night protest at Salt Bae’s ‘ultra-premium’ Knightsbridge restaurant ended with staff carrying the supporters of Animal Rebellion out of a side door. The same evening the group targeted Mana, a Michelin Star restaurant in Manchester serving a menu starting at £195 per person. 14 arrests were made [3].
The actions were part of Animal Rebellion’s demands for a plant-based future, which were announced on Monday 23rd of May [4]. The animal and climate justice group is urging wholesale governmental and societal support for farmers and fishing communities to transition to a plant-based food system and programme of rewilding that will secure a future for generations to come.
Animal Rebellion is a mass movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to call for a just, sustainable plant-based food system.
