At around 19:00, 8 supporters of Animal Rebellion occupied Heston Blumenthal’s two-star Michelin restaurant “Dinner by Heston” in Knightsbridge [1].
In recent weeks supporters of Animal Rebellion have carried out similar actions at locations across the UK, including ‘Salt Bae’s’ ‘Nusr-Et’ and ‘Restaurant Gordon Ramsay’ [2].
The action is part of a national day of action with other cities targeted including Newcastle and Birmingham [3].
Animal Rebellion is calling for a plant-based food system and mass rewilding.
The group says these actions will continue until the government takes meaningful action on the climate and ecological emergencies.
Heston Blumenthal’s ‘Dinner’ Restaurant has been disrupted by 8 supporters of Animal Rebellion. The high-end restaurant serves dinners, with one item being a £128 steak. The restaurant has a meat-heavy menu including many of the foods with the largest carbon, and land-use, footprints, such as pork and beef [4].
Michelle Farnham, 24, A psychology graduate, said
“Today, Animal Rebellion is declaring a national day of action. The luxury restaurants, like Heston Blumenthal’s, that are being occupied are symbols of a social and political system that is failing the 99%. We need massive changes to our food system, alongside radical shifts towards renewable energy and a mass insulation programme.
We know beyond all doubt that our current, animal-based, food system is wrecking the environment and the lives of billions of animals yearly. A plant-based food system would offer us food security in a sustainable, low-cost way. It's a no-brainer.”
Smartly-dressed supporters of Animal Rebellion can be seen occupying tables reserved for customers and holding ‘mock menus’ outlining the group’s core demands stylised as a starter, main, and dessert.
These actions come as part of Animal Rebellion’s demands for a plant-based future, which were announced on Monday 23rd of May [5]. The animal and climate justice group is urging wholesale governmental and societal support for farmers and fishing communities to transition to a plant-based food system and programme of rewilding that will secure a future for generations to come.
Animal Rebellion is a mass movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to call for a just, sustainable plant-based food system.
