JLS Concert Disrupted: “JB Gill Stop Supporting RSPCA Cruelty”

  • At a JLS concert tonight, (24/08/24) two Animal Rising supporters held up a banner reading “JB Gill Stop Supporting RSPCA Cruelty,” calling for Gill to denounce the scheme as a vice-president of the RSPCA.

  • Other supporters leafletted outside, drawing attention to the RSPCA’s failure to protect farmed animals under the RSPCA Assured Scheme.

  • This is one of several high profile actions highlighting the RSPCA’s cruelty, following the redecoration of King Charles’ official portrait and several Banksy artworks, respectively [1] [2].

  • Animal Rising’s investigation into the state of RSPCA Assured farming revealed over 280 legal breaches and 94 DEFRA breaches on over 40 farms, [3] with RSPCA President Chris Packham calling for executives to suspend the scheme [4].

Today, at Live in Somerset in Taunton, two supporters of Animal Rising held up a pink banner decorated with fairy lights that read “JB Gill Stop Supporting RSPCA Cruelty” at various points throughout the concert and were later asked to leave by security, with the banner being confiscated. Gill, who became a RSPCA vice-president in September of 2023, was contacted several times by Animal Rising, with no response.

Animal Rising’s investigation into the Assured scheme discovered dozens of baby chicks dying in factory farms and dead pigs left to rot on filthy floors. The group has called on the RSPCA to drop the Assured scheme and take a resolute stance about protecting all animals.

Catherine Cannon, one of those involved, said:

“As a public figure and RSPCA vice-president, JB Gill has the power to show his care for animals by calling for the RSPCA to drop the Assured scheme and making it clear to the public that systemic animal cruelty is unacceptable.

As the oldest animal charity in the world, the RSPCA has the ability to lead the way for animals by calling for an end to factory farming and endorsing a transition to a plant-based food system. If they truly care about all animals, like their “For Every Kind” campaign claims, then the Assured scheme must end.”

Supporters outside the venue were outreaching and leafleting to inform concertgoers on the importance of needing JB Gill to denounce the scheme, with leaflets including images taken on RSPCA Assured farms.

Animal Rising is a social movement to create a new relationship with all beings and give us a chance for a safe ecological future. The group primarily calls for the transition to a secure and sustainable plant-based food system, alongside a mass rewilding programme.
