Supporters of Animal Rebellion have, today, joined those of Just Stop Oil to disrupt traffic on London’s circular motorway [1].
Animal Rebellion stands in solidarity with Just Stop Oil and their campaign to demand that the government halts all new oil and gas licences and consents [2].
Animal Rebellion says it is committed to supporting Just Stop Oil in its campaign of civil resistance.
At around 6:30 this morning, individuals climbed gantries above the M25 in various locations, causing widespread disruption. Amongst them were supporters of Animal Rebellion, acting alongside supporters of Just Stop Oil to put pressure on the government.
Narcisa Tirpoca, 27, a photography student taking action at junction 13 of the M25 today said:
“We need rapid and decisive politics right now. People are dying in this country due to fuel poverty and millions have been displaced worldwide due to the impacts of the climate crisis. We don’t need another COP, the solutions are right in front of us and need to be put into place. We need the immediate halt of all new fossil fuel licensing, coupled with a switch to renewables, a plant-based food system, and rewilding.
The world’s leading climate and land scientists are all calling for these changes. It’s time we listen to Oxford, Harvard, and The IPCC when they tell us the drastic changes that we need for energy and food security, whilst building a brighter world for all life”
Today’s action follows four weeks of daily disruption and civil resistance by supporters of Just Stop Oil, with Animal Rebellion taking action during October too. Since April 1st, civil resistance by the two groups has resulted in more than 2,250 arrests collectively, with 15 supporters of Just Stop Oil currently in prison [3].
Nathan McGovern, 23, Animal Rebellion spokesperson, who took action with Just Stop Oil throughout April, said:
“The demands of Just Stop Oil are commonsense and a necessary part of the solution to the climate and cost-of-living crises. Whilst Rishi Sunak is making more false promises to COP 27 and Keir Starmer is demonising working people for protesting, teachers, doctors, and nurses have been putting their liberty on the line in hopes of building a better, more beautiful world”
